The Show-Me Center, in partnership with four NSF-sponsored middle grades curriculum development satellites and their publishers, provides information and resources needed to support selection and implementation of standards-based middle grades mathematic curricula. These curricula showcase the vision of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as outlined in their Standards documents. The vision calls for major reform of school mathematics to support the goal of improving mathematics learning. Emphasis is on important mathematics that is explored by students through active engagement. Mathematics content includes topics relevant to today's world (e.g., statistics and probability, algebraic thinking, problem solving) which build onto mathematics established in elementary school but does not repeat it and establishes a foundation for more in-depth study in high school. Teachers facilitate learning by engaging students rather than simply lecturing. Students are encouraged to make sense of mathematics and to see the relevance of mathematics to their present and futures.
