- HAVE YOU SEEN ... The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has developed a new regular publication
called "Mathematics Education Dialogues." The purpose is to provide a forum through which NCTM members can be well
informed about compelling, complex, timely issues that transcend grade levels in mathematics education. In the most
recent issue (May/June 1998) the focus is on testing. To participate in the dialogues among mathematics educators,
send an e-mail to: dialogues@nctm.org.
- Take a look at MiddleWeb, (http://www.middleweb.com) a World Wide Web site
exploring the challenges of middle school reform, and brimming with resources for
educators and parents!>
- Coming soon ... Choosing a Standards-based Mathematics Curriculum, a book
prepared by the staff at the NSF K-12 Implementation Center
(http://www.edc.org/mcc/) to help districts select and implement standards-based
mathematics curriculum.
- The Department of Education released a brochure, "Improving Mathematics in the
Middle School: Lessons from TIMSS and Related Research" developed by Ed Silver.

- AAAS' Project 2061 has received a grant from the Carnegie Corporation to rate science
and mathematics textbooks in the middle grades. The project will analyze the content
and teaching strategies of current textbooks to determine if they align with standards of
the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A report of the results of the analysis

- A CD-ROM on mathematics classroom assessment is now available from the Institute
for Research on Learning. The CD-ROM is a tool for thinking about classroom
assessment and contains classroom video segments, transcripts of student discussion,
